CHRIST CHURCH OXFORD - New ramped access

New ramped access to Tom Quad - North side.

Montgomery Architects carried out an access audit for Christ Church College, identifying significant improvements which could be made to enable better access for all.

Four schemes were submitted for Planning and Listed Building Consent, and the first phase of work was completed by main Contractor Beard in the Spring of this year, which provides ramped access up to the level of the raised terrace in Tom Quad along side the steps to the north of Tom Tower. Detailing of the ramp and handrails were carefully designed to be in keeping with the
existing fabric of the Grade I Listed building.

The new ramp was formed next to the east wall of Tom 5 and Tom 6, by extending the plinths of the existing pilasters on this
elevation down to the level of the new ramp using York stone to match existing. The existing steps were retained and adapted to provide a return against the ramp, thereby softening the visual height at its entrance.

Montgomery Architects were delighted to be awarded with a Certificate from the Oxford Preservation Trust in November 2013
